Why watch this film?

My Favorite Fabric is the feature film debut of filmmaker Gaya Jiji, selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Set in the context of the so-called Arab Spring at the beginning of the 2010s, this is a movie that tackles this context from an angle rarely explored: the feminist one. The story portrays how repression of women persisted in Syria even in a context of supposed freedom, with surrealist allegories to desire and erotica. A movie that explores taboos with an audacious sensitivity, and paints a metaphorical prelude to the violence that would define the country for the rest of the decade.
