Why watch this film?
"The New Mutants", based on the same-titled comics published by Marvel Comics, is a derivative of the X-Men franchise that attempts to innovate within superhero movies. Forget about sticky and colorful costumes, or even a grand mission to save the world. Here, we have a group of young mutants trying to save their own skin. With this, the feature brings elements of terror, even paying homage to another exponent of this "improbable" union: 'Buffy, The Vampire Slayer'. Unfortunately, unlike 'Buffy', the feature tries to create a truly engaging and frightening atmosphere, but ends up failing in this mission. The cast has heavyweight names, such as Anya Taylor-Joy ('The Queen's Gambit'), Maisie Williams ('Game of Thrones'), Charlie Heaton ('Stranger Things') and Brazilian Alice Braga and Henry Zaga - all committed to their performances, albeit a bit lost with Josh Boone's directionless direction. Unfortunately, this ended up becoming the "end" of the Fox X-Men Universe in theaters after the studio's purchase by Disney. And this ending could not be more turbulent: both companies were never very secure with the feature, which ended up being postponed and was released right during the covid-19 pandemic - that is, it was seen by few people in theaters. That said, the movie is worth the entertainment of about 90 minutes if you ignore the plot holes and watch a home cinema session unpretentiously, maybe in the middle of the night ...
