Why watch this film?
Have you seen any films by German filmmaker Douglas Sirk? He is known for 1950s productions such as 'Written on the Wind', 'Imitation of Life', 'Magnificent Obsession' and other films of the so-called "Golden Age of Hollywood". If you haven't seen anything by him, you should or could start with 'Sylvie's Love', which has strong influences from Sirk. This jazz-soaked melodrama has a beautiful aesthetic - both visually and musically. Despite this, the screenplay written by Eugene Ashe is not the most surprising, leaving it to the protagonists Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha to bring magic to the screen. And they do.
