Why watch this film?
Traveling through the so-called "Valley of Strangeness," this version of 'Pinocchio' causes discomfort. After all, director Matteo Garrone ('Dogman', 'The Tale of Tales') completely departs from the classic Disney version and fully embraces Carlo Collodi's story, with all the bizarre elements that exist in this journey of the wooden boy. Here, as we saw in 'The Tale of Tales', the highlight is for the production design, makeup and practical effects, which surprise - as well as the performance of the little Federico Ielapi ('Employee of the Month'), who stands out with his innocence and delicacy. However, given Garrone's recent work, it can be said that the film does not reach its full potential. It seems that the filmmaker does not decide between the fairy tale and the bizarre nature of the story, staying on the fence in a complicated way. It would have been more interesting if the filmmaker had distanced himself from any childishness to deliver, perhaps, an even darker, stranger, disturbing story. It would be more original and, undoubtedly, much more memorable.

Plot summary

From Italian director Matteo Garrone (‘Gomorra’), this film competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It is a loose adaptation of Giambattista Basile’s fairy tales starring big names such as Vincent Cassell, John C. Reilly, Salma Hayek, Stacy Martin and Toby Jones, ‘The Tale of Tales’ brings these fantasies to life on the silver screen as they were originally conceived: with stunningly surreal images that are as beautiful as they are grotesque, and will stay in your mind either way.
Dogman
Matteo Garrone, from 'Gomorra' and 'Reality: The Great Illusion', directs a true character study about a man (passionate about dogs, hence the title) who lives a mediocre life and is taken to his limit. Thus, we have a story about bullying and morality. The result is a film that was highly praised in the festival circuit (including Cannes) and that sounds extremely current.
Reality
An interesting union of satire and drama, 'Reality' won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Festival in 2012. Using the Big Brother TV program as a backdrop, the movie makes humor out of the search for fame with a style reminiscent of 1960s Italian comedies. An interesting humor, which even fits into the Brazilian reality.
Io Capitano
Io Captain is an Italian film nominated for the Best International Film Oscar, but it unfolds far from the streets of Rome: it's actually a portrait of the situation of two Senegalese boys seeking a new life in Europe—specifically, in Italy. From there, director Matteo Garrone (Dogman) turns this journey almost into a fable, adding his already traditional and unexpected doses of fantasy as the boys venture through hell to try to cross Africa and, perhaps, start a new life in Europe. It's a beautiful and simple film that, despite the somewhat uncomprehending issue of being a story about African refugees told by a white European, manages to evoke genuine feelings.

Robot Dreams
Sometimes we get so carried away by the marketing power of studios like Disney Pixar, and we overlook other avenues for deep and powerful animated stories that don't need excessively complex plots to evoke emotions. Such is the case with Robot Dreams, a Hispanic-French production directed by Pablo Berger (2012’s Snow White), based on the eponymous graphic novel by Sara Varon. Set in New York during the 80s, the story follows Dog, whose solitary life leads him to buy a robot for companionship. Their friendship grows, but an unfortunate day at the beach forces them to separate and long for the day of their reunion. Virtually without dialogue, with vibrant animation and a captivating visual language, the film tells a simple yet profoundly moving story about (curiously) human relationships and the course they take despite (or because of) accidents, fortuitous circumstances, and uncontrollable events that happen throughout life.
Masha and the Bear: Twice the Fun
Masha leaves the forest in pursuit of an adventure in the city, where she encounters many unexpected situations and surprises while attending a wedding, and later seeks to do everything in her power to save Christmas.
