Why watch this film?

What an intense and provocative movie 'Schwesterlein' is, the Swiss drama selected to compete for Best International Film at the 2021 Oscars. Directed by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond, the feature has a very clear purpose: to talk about families. Here, in the specific case of this production, about the relationship between Lisa (Nina Hoss) and her brother, Sven (Lars Eidinger). She is an award-winning playwright living temporarily in Switzerland due to her husband's obligations - a musician responsible for a renowned educational institution in the European country. Meanwhile, her brother is going through some problems. A theater actor, he finds himself away from the stage after undergoing treatment for cancer and facing health issues. From there, Chuat and Reymond skillfully put the viewer in this whirlwind of emotions that arises in this story. They are intense meetings and misunderstandings that, with troubled family relationships, end up showing what is worst and best in human beings. It is difficult not to feel the emotion that these characters overflow on screen, confronted with the sigh that is life. However, beware: it is a melodrama until the last minute. It leaves no room for anything else.
