Why watch this film?
It is well known that one of the "ingredients" in Marvel Comics' winning formula during the golden age of comics was the humanization of its characters, that is, it wasn't just about heroes with incredible abilities, but ordinary humans with the same problems as any person. 'Marvel: Behind the Mask' is a documentary that delves into the vast pantheon of characters, and through conversations with creators like comic artist Joe Quesada (editor of the 'Marvel Knights' series), Jeanine Schaefer (editor of 'X-Men'), Neal Kirby (son of the legendary Jack Kirby, co-creator of characters such as Captain America and The Fantastic Four), writer and illustrator Nicole J. Georges, Tony Isabella (creator of 'Black Goliath'), Christopher Priest (first black editor in the mainstream comics industry) and Kelly Sue DeConnick (influential writer of 'Captain Marvel'), to name a few. The documentary does little to interest those unfamiliar with the world of comics and superheroes, but for fans, it offers a solid look at Marvel Comics' cultural relevance from its beginnings to its most current stories of more diverse characters, such as Miles Morales and Kamala Khan.
