Why watch this film?
The western genre has been forgotten by the big studios, the last feature films are from Quentin Tarantino, such as 'The Hateful Eight' and 'Django'. If you're a fan of this type of movie you will like 'Hickok', which tells the story of Wild Bill Hickok, a legend of the North American Far West. The protagonist of the film is Luke Hemsworth, brother of Chris Hemsworth ('Thor'), who was known for his role in the 'Westworld' series, also with a western atmosphere. It's a very accurate movie in terms of history, despite presenting several problems in the script and in the performances.

The Final Wish
Since the 'Supernatural' franchise, Lin Shaye seems to have found her niche in horror. In 'The Final Wish' it's no different: the actress offers her talent in an interesting story about the power of grief to blur the boundaries of reality. The story is led by Michael Welch, who has become a familiar face for his participation in 'Twilight', and tells the journey of a young man who discovers a strange object from his deceased father that grants wishes. What starts as a gift soon turns into a terrible nightmare - with scares and terrifying figures. The movie may be a bit slower than conventional horror, but makes up for it in an interesting script with psychological horror vibes.
The Call
Besides keeping suspense with constant scary scenes, 'The Last Call' also works for fans of the 80s. Not only is the story set in the 80s, there are many visual references to famous movies from that time. Some young people decide to bother the wrong person and lead an elderly woman to suicide, but her husband will take revenge with a game that will bring her back. It's spine-tingling.

The Settlers
The Settlers (Los colonos), directed by Felipe Gálvez, is a Chilean film that appropriates the conventions of the revisionist western to explore a often marginalized side of Chile's colonialist history. The plot revolves around a landowner who hires an expedition to demarcate his property and open a path through Patagonia to the Atlantic Ocean. Who makes up the expedition? A young Chilean mestizo, an American mercenary, and an English lieutenant—a uneasy mix that generates tensions. Although scattered in tone and narrative, The Settlers is visually impressive and serves as a good starting point if you want to learn more about European colonization in Latin America, the repercussions of which are still felt today.
Dead for a Dollar
Directed by veteran of the Western and action cinema, Walter Hill (Revenge, Deadwood), Dead for a Dollar (Muerto por un dólar) is an austere and classic Western in its narrative. The story follows a bounty hunter veteran who must cross into Mexico to save the wife of a millionaire, but soon discovers that she is actually running from him and he must decide whether to protect her or return her. At times the budget shortages are noticeable, but its narrative explores a historically ungenerous era –and genre– with women and people of color. That, plus good performances by Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Christoph Watz (Inglourious Basterds) make it worth a chance.
Old Henry
It is one of the few films that can even interest those who don't like westerns. Starring Tim Blake Nelson, it was nominated for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival and has been a worldwide success due to its great ability to keep us intrigued with the story of 'Old Henry'.
Never Grow Old
"Never Grow Old" is an Irish Western starring Emile Hirsch ("Into the Wild") and John Cusack ("Being John Malkovich") as the antagonist. The film follows Emile's character, a funeral director living in a peaceful, vice-free town whose peace is disturbed by the arrival of a stranger bringing alcohol, cards, and women. The vices destabilize the town, and though the activity proves lucrative for the funeral home, he realizes that the situation could put his family in danger. The film is slow and immersive, building up a lot of tension as it unfolds. The characters present a complex morality that cannot be easily defined as good or bad, and the performances of both protagonists carry the movie. It is a modern Western in all its implications, seeking ways to rekindle the genre and develop new conflicts.
