Why watch this film?

A great classic of national cinema, being the first Latin American film to be nominated for an Oscar and also the first (and still only) Brazilian feature film to win the Palme d'Or, Cannes Film Festival's main award - 'Black Orpheus' which won the prize in 1959, is considered a French production. It is a critical look at society, addressing the use of religion as social control and cultural intolerance - while it values our own ethnic heritage. Although the production seems dated to the eyes of the younger ones, this is a timeless tale.
