Why watch this film?
One of the great action films of the 1980s - mainly because, in addition to the basics, it deals with topics such as the power of the media, gentrification, corruption, authoritarianism, privatization, greed, identity, human nature... A true package of criticism and doses of realism wrapped in a paper of science fiction. If you didn't notice all this the first time you watched it, it's time to watch it again.

Plot summary
Set in old Detroit, a crime-ridden ghetto of the not too distant future, a cop killed in the line of duty is robotized then dispatched to fight crime. But Robocop is haunted by memories and dreams of who and what he used to be. As he rediscovers his past, he uncovers a murder conspiracy at the highest level of police management.

Basic Instinct
In the 1980s and 1990s, cinema began to witness the emergence of erotic thrillers. These were stories based on mysteries and investigations, but with a flavor of sexuality and eroticism in scenes and situations. This is the case of 'Fatal Attraction', 'Sexual Harassment' and 'Basic Instinct', one of the most iconic films of this movement. With Sharon Stone's classic leg-crossing scene, Paul Verhoeven's (of 'Showgirls' and 'RoboCop') feature film tells the story of a policeman (Michael Douglas) falling into a web of seduction while investigating a murder. Although a bit banal in its conduct and in the conclusion of the plot, it is impossible not to be enchanted by the performances of Douglas ('Wall Street') and Stone ('Casino'), who exude chemistry in every scene. A strange movie by today's standards, but still sensual until the very last scene.

Isabelle Huppert gives a powerful performance portraying a tough woman in the business world who has many layers and faces an unexpected situation. For this reason, she was nominated for an Oscar in 2017.
Benedetta
Paul Verhoeven is a challenging and provocative filmmaker: from the sci-fi 'RoboCop', in which he questioned the limits of technology within police forces, to an intense war drama in 'The Spy' and even to more controversial films such as 'Showgirls' and 'Basic Instinct'. 'Benedetta', a drama that caused uproar when it passed through film festivals, calmly enters this last group. The plot, based on facts, tells the story of a nun (Benedetta, played by Virginie Efira) who, in a 17th century convent, begins to have disturbing visions. All of them with a religious background, but also with blasphemous icons inserted into these dreams. From then on, her life in the convent begins to spiral into a vortex of sex and identity confusion. Verhoeven plays with all the possibilities of this story and quickly embraces satire to poke believers and the most conservative - which includes a dildo made with a cross. In addition to Efira being magnetic on screen, there are also good performances by Charlotte Rampling and Daphne Patakia, which allow the filmmaker to compose this scenario full of provocative moments.

Bloodsport
Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in the descriptively titled Bloodsport. An American soldier at large in Hong Kong, Van Damme becomes involved in the Kumite, a highly illegal kickboxing competition. Whoever survives the bout will be crowned Kumite champion of the world…a title that has plenty of challengers with homicide in their hearts. The finale offers a duel to the death between Van Damme and reigning Kumite king Bolo Yeung. The script is based on the real-life exploits of martial arts champ Frank Dux, who serves as the film's fight coordinator.

The Order
In The Order, Van Damme plays a man accused of murder who seeks a sacred scripture in Jerusalem before it falls into the wrong hands, jeopardizing his freedom. With shades of Dan Brown and a script by Jean Claude Van Damme himself, alongside Les Weldon (screenwriter of another action star film, Replicant), the movie is what every fan of the Belgian actor wants: brawling, with a fun plot, and never boring.
