Why watch this film?
"Shazam!" continues DC's superhero expansion with Warner Bros. at the helm. The protagonist is a classic comic book character, originally known as Captain Marvel, but this name was abandoned due to a trademark dispute with Marvel Entertainment. In this movie version, directed by David F. Sandberg (from "Annabelle 2"), there are strong influences of the classic 'Big' - the protagonist, Billy Batson, is a boy who gains magical powers and turns into the "Most Powerful Mortal on Earth" by yelling the magical word "Shazam!", becoming an adult in the process. The protagonist, in his grown-up version, is played by Zachary Levi from the series "Chuck". With a focus on humor and without major moral dilemmas (which mark the movies of other DC heroes), this film guarantees unpretentious fun for the whole family.

Annabelle: Creation
The most interesting and "out of the box" movie of the cursed doll franchise. After all, here, filmmaker David F. Sandberg takes advantage of an origin story to create a solid foundation of Annabelle's ancestors and, mainly, creates connections with the first movie of the franchise. With a good amount of scares and many jump scares, the feature ends up going beyond the scary appearances of the doll and the potential frightening of its figure. It has story, it has good characters, it has a scary atmosphere by itself. Obviously, the plot ends up being hostage to some obvious and mandatory solutions involving the 'Conjuring' saga, which ends up reducing a bit of the power of 'Annabelle: Creation' as a movie by itself. But that's okay. Still, it's a fun movie for the end of the day and leaves a horror atmosphere even after the final credits. Highlight for the great Lulu Wilson.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Sequel to the 2019 film, 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' starts differently. Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is now a teenager, nearing adulthood, who can transform into a superhero (Levi) when he invokes a sort of mystical power. Now, however, he is not alone: his foster siblings also share the power and begin to defend the city of Philadelphia, in the United States, from villains. This is the case with three Greek gods (Helen Mirren, Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu) who threaten the superhero family by facing other strong mystical powers. The film doesn't have the brilliance of DC's "independent" productions like 'Batman' and 'Joker', but it's also far from being a disaster like 'Batman v. Superman', 'Justice League', and even 'Wonder Woman 1984'. The film has a certain freshness, similar to that seen in Gunn's 'The Suicide Squad'. Like in the first feature, director David F. Sandberg ('Lights Out') knows that Shazam's story cannot be as grand as Batman's journey on the big screen, for example, or Superman's. He needs to focus on the little, on the closeness of these heroes who are actually teenagers experiencing almost magical powers. That's where the fun and the difference of the film lies, which doesn't take itself too seriously and therefore doesn't make any commitment to the viewer to be grand or opulent. It goes straight to the point, being its main virtue and making the experience the most enjoyable possible in the end.

Robot Dreams
Sometimes we get so carried away by the marketing power of studios like Disney Pixar, and we overlook other avenues for deep and powerful animated stories that don't need excessively complex plots to evoke emotions. Such is the case with Robot Dreams, a Hispanic-French production directed by Pablo Berger (2012’s Snow White), based on the eponymous graphic novel by Sara Varon. Set in New York during the 80s, the story follows Dog, whose solitary life leads him to buy a robot for companionship. Their friendship grows, but an unfortunate day at the beach forces them to separate and long for the day of their reunion. Virtually without dialogue, with vibrant animation and a captivating visual language, the film tells a simple yet profoundly moving story about (curiously) human relationships and the course they take despite (or because of) accidents, fortuitous circumstances, and uncontrollable events that happen throughout life.
