Why watch this film?
In "Collateral" we have Tom Cruise in an unusual role for the actor: the villain – and when watching it, we realize that Cruise should appear as the antagonist more often, since it is one of his most interesting performances. Still, the star here is Jamie Foxx, who plays a cab driver caught in the middle of a whirlwind of murders over one night, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In addition, director Michael Mann (of "The Insider") knows how to build a thriller atmosphere with interesting twists. The editing by Jim Miller and Raul Rubell also helps a lot with the pace – and for that, it was also nominated for an Oscar.

Miami Vice
After 22 years of the television series' success, 'Miami Vice' finally hit the big screen in 2006. The cast from the TV production wasn't called back, leaving the responsibility to represent the veterans in the hands of Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx - plus, Michael Mann ('Collateral') signed as director, while he was previously a producer of the series. The atmosphere isn't the same and those who go to watch the movie wanting to reclaim the old spirit of the series will be disappointed. A lot has changed, the tone isn't the same anymore. However, when thinking of 'Miami Vice' as an independent production, the qualities of a good police story are there: tense moments, an unsettling ongoing investigation, and good actors leading action and suspense in equal measures. The advice, then, is to forget the series and embark on the proposal. Despite mistakes here and there, the fun arrives and, who knows, maybe the taste of the 1980s production comes back?
Heat
Al Pacino and Robert De Niro starred in 'The Godfather: Part II' in the mid-1970s, but didn't act together again until the release of this movie in 1995. The result is a legendary duel in an extremely praised movie for its performances. Considered Michael Mann's best film (who, look at that, did 'The Insider' and 'The Last of the Mohicans'), 'Heat' has one of the most intense gunfights ever made on screen, and years later influenced another masterpiece: Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight'.
Ferrari
The return of director Michael Mann (Heat) after eight years away from the cinema is a film he tried to make for three decades: "Ferrari," inspired by the biography "Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine" written by Brock Yates. The film narrates a turbulent period in the life of the founder of the famous automaker (played by Adam Driver): it's 1957, his marriage to his wife and co-founder (Penélope Cruz) is in ruins, he conceals an illegitimate child with another woman (Shailene Woodley), and his company is on the brink of bankruptcy. His only hope is to bet on winning the Mille Miglia race to attract investment, a game with a delicate balance between his public reputation and private life, which he will try to control at all times. Despite the questionable Italian accents, the performances are good (Cruz, in particular, is monumental), and all elements contribute to a story about the desperation of maintaining control in the face of the consequences of the most despicable acts.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
