Why watch this film?
Just saying that 'Sunset Boulevard' is considered by many to be the best movie about Hollywood ever made. The original title, 'Sunset Boulevard', is a reference to the avenue parallel to Hollywood Boulevard - where, in the Golden Age of cinema, there were great studios and stars lived in their huge mansions. In Billy Wilder's (director of 'Some Like it Hot') masterpiece, we have a very unusual meta-fictional story for its time, which earned him the Oscar for best screenplay (music and art direction were also awarded). It's an essential classic for those who are fans of Hollywood cinema or the seventh art in general.

The Apartment
Directed by Billy Wilder (of the brilliant 'A Double Life'), 'The Apartment' is the same kind of cynical, adult comedy that began to tackle more daring themes as restrictions of the Motion Picture Production Code (or "Hays Code") started to become looser in the Hollywood circuit. Winner of five Academy Awards (including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay) and nominated for another five, it is a movie that dared at the time to address adultery with humor, but also a good dose of melancholy, taking advantage of this to criticize the double standards of the era.
The Seven Year Itch
Based on the play by George Axelrod (who also co-wrote the film's screenplay), this movie could very well be Billy Wilder's most iconic classic in his immense filmography, and that is already saying a lot for someone who directed Some Like it Hot, The Apartment, and Sunset Boulevard. The Seven Year Itch follows a man who, away from his wife and child for an extended period of time, begins to flirt with the prospect of infidelity, and is terribly tempted by a beautiful actress and model staying in his building (Marilyn Monroe). Filmed and released at a time when depicting such themes openly in cinema was prohibited due to the "Hays Code," The Seven Year Itch is one of the great examples of how Wilder and other directors managed to bring those themes to the big screen through suggestive images and dialogues, never explicit, playing with subtle double entendres. The result is an incomparable romantic comedy full of wit that also contains one of the most iconic images of the 20th century: that of Marilyn Manson in her white dress, with her skirt being lifted up by the subway's air vent, which catapulted her to legend status.
Some Like It Hot
While Marilyn tried to break away from the "dumb blonde" archetype on screen (achieving a good performance in a more interesting role in 'Never Been Kissed'), these types of characters would haunt her in her later films. Her second-to-last, and second with Billy Wilder, was 'Some Like It Hot'. The story is about two jazz musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) who, to escape the mafia, decide to pass themselves off as women and join a female band on their way to a show in Miami, though they end up falling in love with the vocalist (Monroe). It is one of the most interesting films of the career of all involved for cleverly and classily escaping many of the restrictions of the "Hays Code," which regulated and censored the themes represented on screen at the time. The production manages to touch on issues such as homosexuality and cross-dressing, as well as showing a man and a woman in the same bed (something forbidden at the time), which earned it a place among the best films of all time, despite Monroe's dislike for her role.

Lie With Me (Arrête avec tes mensonges) - An emotional French drama directed by Olivier Peyo, has been awarded the award for Best Narrative Feature Film at FilmOut San Diego. The film follows a writer who returns to his hometown of Cognac after 35 years to represent a cognac brand and reunites with the son of his first love, a role played by Victor Belmondo, triggering an avalanche of passionate memories of his youth.
Kidnapped
In Kidnapped (Rapito), Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio delves into one of the murkiest and most controversial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church, the "Mortara case". In 1851, when Jewish boy Edgardo Mortara becomes gravely ill, his Catholic nanny decides to baptize him in an emergency. However, papal law dictates that all Catholics must be raised as such, so the cardinal orders the boy to be taken and handed over to the church, against his parents' wishes, who decide to fight for him. The film recounts a controversial case that captured the attention of the rest of Europe and America, and skillfully portrays the clash of interests between the waning power of the church, Mortara's parents, and public opinion, with irreversible consequences for all involved.

'Green Border' - In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko.
