Why watch this film?

Directed by Spanish director Isabel Coixet (winner of the Ariel and Goya for 'The Secret Life of Words'), 'Elisa y Marcela' is an emotionally gripping and visually stylish drama, based on the true story of the first same-sex marriage in Spain in 1909 – of course, done in secret. Though it has pacing issues, there's no doubt of its historical importance in telling the lives of two women whose experiences have been erased from collective memory. Part of the official selection of the prestigious Berlin Film Festival in 2019.
