Why watch this film?
This is a portrait of midlife crisis in today's urban society, in a story that fits well with the reality of large Brazilian cities. In the story, a writer (played by Vincent Macaigne, of 'Agnus Dei') and an editor (Guillaume Canet, of 'Na Próxima, Acerto o Coração') are going through crises in their literary careers and their relationships. The result is an intelligent, sharp feature film, with great dialogue, in the style of what French cinema has to offer at its best. All this is enhanced by Juliette Binoche's performance (who won an Oscar for 'The English Patient') and Olivier Assayas's excellent direction ('Personal Shopper').

A supernatural-tinged movie for those who want to see a story with spiritualist influences or who appreciate such elements in a drama. Olivier Assayas's direction is impeccable, building up the atmosphere of a psychological thriller perfectly - and it won the Best Director award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
Wasp Network
Directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas ('Personal Shopper') and part of the official selection of the 2019 Venice Film Festival, the first thing that stands out in 'Wasp Network' is its Ibero-American cast of international dimension: Penélope Cruz ('Everybody Knows'), Gael García Bernal ('Ema'), Ana de Armas ('Knives Out'), Edgar Ramírez ('Zero Dark Thirty'), Wagner Moura ('Sergio') and Leonardo Sbaraglia ('Pain and Glory'). Based on the book 'The Last Soldiers of the Cold War' by Brazilian journalist Fernando Morais, this semi-biographical thriller recreates the true story of Cuban spies on American soil, with a dynamic and elegant direction that, although unusual within Assayas' filmography, is very well done. The script is more problematic, as it gets involved and stumbles upon its own weight due to the excess of characters and subplots. However, if you like political thrillers - and even better, based on real events - it's worth watching.
Clouds of Sils Maria
French director Olivier Assayas is well-known for his meta-fiction games in his films, which blur the lines between life and art, reality and fiction, or better said: fiction as a tool to strip away reality. In 'Clouds of Sils Maria', the director wrote the screenplay with Juliette Binoche in mind, incorporating aspects of her life into the plot. The story follows Maria, an established actress who made her name in a play and movie where she plays Sigrid, a young and captivating woman who seduces an older, vulnerable Helena, leading her to suicide. Now at the peak of her career, Maria faces the decision to act in the same play, but now in the role of Helena, forcing her to confront her professional jealousies and personal insecurities, while also sparking a sexual tension with another young woman, who is her assistant. The film is also a treatise on what aging means for actresses in the entertainment industry, with magnificent performances from Binoche and her two Sigrids: Chloé Grace Moretz and Kristen Stewart (the latter in one of the best performances of her career, winning the César Award).
