Peterloo

British forces violently attack peaceful pro-democracy rally in Manchester.

Trailer

Why watch this film?

As the title suggests, the movie is based on the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819, one of the cruellest episodes in British history - when the government ordered the massacre of tens of thousands of peaceful protesters, who were seeking greater parliamentary representation. Directed by Mike Leigh ('Secrets & Lies') and selected at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, 'Peterloo' is the kind of feature film that can be a bit dialogue-heavy, but it captures the rage and frustration of people in its respective era, which in turn makes the story gain an air of authenticity and relevance in our days. The cast is, of course, full of British actors offering great performances, and among them you will no doubt recognize Rory Kinnear and Maxine Peake from 'Black Mirror'.
