Why watch this film?

There are many prejudices and stereotypes around what it means to identify as Muslim, and as is often the case with any other culture, there is endless richness, diversity and also contradictions. From Moroccan-born filmmaker and journalist Jawad Rhalib, ‘When Arabs Danced’ is a brief yet profound documentary, aiming to be a voice of reason amidst the deluge of misinformation about the Islamic world, often represented solely under discourses of terror and radicalism. The feature film emphasizes the recent manifestations of religious fundamentalism and the dangers they represent for true freedom, thus making art itself a provocation. Documentary selected at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Plot summary

In a film that gives voice to Arabs worldwide who refuse to be defined by stereotypes of repression and fundamentalism, director Jawad Rhalib questions the many facets of his culture that has sadly been forgotten by western and middle eastern media alike — especially its love for dancing and music. An important and timely reminder that the creative arts have always been an integral part of the great texture of the Arab identity
