Gretel & Hansel

A young girl and her brother venture into a dark wood, encountering terrifying evil.

Why watch this film?

Starring Sophia Lillis (the young version of the character Beverly in the most recent cinematic adaptation of 'It: The Thing'), this is a reinterpretation of 'Hansel & Gretel', the classic fairy tale, but aligned with films like Robert Eggers' 'The Witch' - that is, carrying on the nightmare and occultism. With 'Gretel & Hansel', director Oz Perkins (also responsible for 'The Blackcoat's Daughter') puts less emphasis on a fast narrative rhythm and "easy scares" to focus on creating a disturbing and hypnotic atmosphere - with the brilliant photography of Mexican Galo Olivares ('Roma') - in addition to telling an intelligent story of female empowerment. It may be a somewhat parsimonious and contemplative feature film for those who prefer more commercial horror cinema, but those looking for a more interesting proposal will certainly be satisfied.
