Why watch this film?

Presented at Sundance, San Sebastián, and Tribeca festivals, among others, 'This Is Not Berlin' is a semi-autobiographical film by Mexican director Hari Sama ('El sueño de Lú', 'Despertar el polvo'), depicting a very specific moment in the history of Mexico City and its surroundings. Within the “coming of age” movies genre, this one portrays a rising subculture, with a protagonist (Xabiani Ponce de León) on his very personal quest for identity, while the world's eyes were set on Mexico for the World Cup, not long after the devastating 1985 earthquake. With a punk rock spirit and an hallucinating aesthetic that reflects both the internal turbulence of its characters, as well as the social, political, and ideological convulsions worldwide; this film is more than a biographical work, it is a time capsule of a Mexico in search of a transformation that we now know was thwarted.
