Trailer

Why watch this film?

Acclaimed director Dee Rees ("Mudbound: Tears on the Mississippi") takes a risk in adapting a Joan Didion novel (something only attempted before with 1972's "Play It as It Lays") and gets uneven results. "The Last Thing He Wanted" takes place during Ronald Reagan's presidency, which had an aggressive arms policy to combat Soviet influence. Though it's material for a fascinating political thriller, the feature doesn't reach its potential due to a strange script. The movie is saved by Anne Hathaway's performance and the always electrifying Willem Dafoe, so it deserves a chance if you're a fan of either of these two great actors. The cast also features Ben Affleck.
