Why watch this film?
Following Hollywood's trend of packaging big foreign films with a typically American production, 'Downhill' is an adaptation of the award-winning Swedish film 'Force Majeure', which became well known for its scene of a father abandoning his family in an avalanche. Here, in this new version starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus (from 'Seinfeld') and Will Ferrell ('Everything Must Go'), the drama gives way to a more family-friendly and situational comedy, with directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (from the great 'The Way Way Back') softening the tones from the Swedish material. But even if more traditional cinephiles are uncomfortable with this reinterpretation, it's interesting to see how 'Downhill' works in some of its layers and ends up becoming an interesting independent material. The protagonists Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell have an unexpected chemistry and the discomfort between the family, caused by the avalanche escape, is felt in every scene of the film. Is the original better? Definitely. There is more depth and strength, as well as an interesting freshness. But this remake works if you forget a bit of the original and give this American reinterpretation a chance. You can watch both without any problems or contradictions. Each has its highs and lows, with precious reflections on family.
