Why watch this film?

Based on 'The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter', the oldest narrative text in Japan, 'Kaguyahime no monogatari' is the last movie of the legendary Isao Takahata (of 'Grave of the Fireflies') before his death in 2018. Similarly to 'My Neighbors the Yamadas', also directed by him, this movie marks a shift in the artistic direction of Studio Ghibli, which makes use of a watercolor aesthetic to evoke ancient Japanese art. A true hand-animated gem, but also a solid introduction to one of Japan's most famous stories, as well as a fitting farewell to its renowned director.
