Why watch this film?

If we're talking about truly independent Mexican cinema, there are few contemporary examples as fitting as 'El Viaje de Keta', the debut feature by directors Julio Bekhór and Fernando Sama, produced in parts over seven years with a small budget and little to no support or incentives of any kind. The result, more episodic than a traditional narrative, is a collection of irreverent, funny and psychedelic anecdotes that tackle timely topics, all with a fabulous kitsch aesthetic that will give you vibes from John Waters' films ('Pink Flamingos'). With protagonist Keta (Mayte Vallejo) at its core, the movie takes us along with characters ranging from the stereotypical like telenovela actresses (Fabiola Campomanes) or high society ladies (the legendary Angélica María), to the most outlandish like Sor Tacha (no joke), a nun of the underworld portrayed by Mónica Huarte.
