Why watch this film?

Just like 'The Year My Parents Went on Vacation', the good Chilean drama 'Tarde Para Morir Joven' is about that feeling that descends upon youth in times of totalitarianism. Here, three teenagers experience their first loves and experiments in a time when freedom was still a utopia in Chile. Directed by the talented Dominga Sotomayor Castillo (of the road movie 'De Quinta a Domingo'), the film bets on a naturalness that jumps to the eyes and makes the tone of the story almost documentary. Some may be surprised, mainly for the apparent lack of plot and climax. But the truth that emanates from the characters and events ends up enchanting and making the experience worthwhile. Award-winning film at the Locarno International Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Plot summary

The year 1990 was when Chile transitioned to democracy, but all of that seems a world away for 16-year-old Sofia, who lives far off the grid in a mountain enclave of artists and bohemians. Too Late to Die Young takes place during the hot, languorous days between Christmas and New Year’s Day, when the troubling realities of the adult world—and the elemental forces of nature—begin to intrude on her teenage idyll.
