Why watch this film?

At nearly three hours long, 'Underground: Once Upon a Time in the Land' is a dark comedic drama directed by Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica ('Time of the Gypsies'), which condenses five decades of Yugoslavian (now Serbia) history into three parts and with a peculiar approach: physical comedy, absurdist humor, outrageous situations bordering on the surreal, but with a deep sense of tragedy. Film critic Deborah Young wrote that "if (Federico) Fellini had filmed a war movie, it would look like 'Underground'."Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival (among many other nominations and awards), it's a rollercoaster of events both dramatic and delirious that will surely leave you exhausted, not only for its length and increasing intensity, but also for its deep emotional intelligence. 'Underground: Once Upon a Time in the Land' is the devastating story of a cynical political illusion, which dissipates in the blink of an eye after deceiving an entire country for decades.
