Why watch this film?

'Cyrano de Bergerac' is one of the most popular works in the history of French dramaturgy (based, in turn, on the life of the homonymous playwright), and consequently, it has been adapted to exhaustion in other media. Cinema is no exception, since there are silent versions from 1900 and 1925, up to an adaptation with Gérard Depardieu in 1990, or its modernized reinvention starring Steve Martin, 'Roxanne', from 1987. It is difficult to do something original with the myth of Cyrano, so French director and screenwriter Alexis Michalik opts for a less explored route: the story of his own creation. Based on his theatrical work 'Edmond', 'Cyrano mon amour' is a funny period drama visually very well done (nominated for two César Awards, for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design). Although at times it indulges in histrionic excess in favor of ridicule, it is an immensely entertaining movie about the events that took place backstage in the time of the Belle Époque, which gives a fresh vision to a very well-known story.

Plot summary

December 1897, Paris. Edmond Rostand is not yet thirty but already two children and a lot of anxieties. He has not written anything for two years. In desperation, he offers the great Constant Coquelin a new play, a heroic comedy, in verse, for the holidays. Only concern: it is not written yet. Ignoring the whims of actresses, the demands of his Corsican producers, the jealousy of his wife, the stories of his best friend's heart and the lack of enthusiasm of all those around him, Edmond starts writing this piece which nobody believes. For now, he has only the title: "Cyrano de Bergerac".
