Adam Sandler has three faces in cinema. In one, he is a dramatic actor and takes risks on bold projects like 'Uncut Gems' and 'Punch-Drunk Love'. In another, he bets on family-friendly and sympathetic comedies, sometimes romantic, such as 'Click' and 'Just Go With It'. Finally, there are those productions of outrageous humor that work for specific audiences, such as 'Grown Ups' and 'That's My Boy'. You Don't Mess With the Zohan
"You Don't Mess with the Zohan" is one of Adam Sandler's most absurd movies, for better or worse. Thinking on the negative side, the movie exaggerates its jokes and crosses some moral boundaries that are uncomfortable without causing any kind of laughter, reflection, or amusement. It's just absurdity for the sake of absurdity, to shock an audience looking for free lowbrow comedy. However, on the positive side, this movie starring Sandler ("50 First Dates") and John Turturro ("The Big Lebowski") takes advantage of the comedy of the absurd to construct a plot that is neither here nor there: the story of a high-ranking military agent from Israel who fakes his own death in an attack by his arch-nemesis, the terrorist Phantom (Turturro), to fulfill his life's dream: to become a hairdresser in New York. It's ridiculous, it's tacky, it's absurd. But if you're looking for those exact attributes, you can have a good time.
Love, Weddings & Other Disasters
Director Dennis Dugan is responsible for some of the most questionable films of Adam Sandler's career, such as 'Happy Gilmore' and 'You Don't Mess with the Zohan'. Now, without the comedy star, he decides to leave the slapstick comedy aside and embrace romance in 'Love, Weddings & Other Disasters'. However, despite the change of scenery, Dugan shows that it is still him in charge of a feature film by presenting us with a confusing story, full of embarrassing moments, which not even a cast with Jeremy Irons and Diane Keaton can save -- the latter, by the way, in one of the worst roles of her career as a blind woman. Although the intertwining of several stories involving love, romance and weddings is interesting, and may attract an audience looking for uncommitted fun, 'Love, Weddings & Other Disasters' ends up getting the dose wrong. How? By mixing too many characters, in too many stories, without ever giving due attention. Dugan also lacked more care in the humor, which ranges from nonsense, to slapstick, to something reminiscent of a certain British comedy. The idea here is good. The cast too. But the result is questionable, justifying the approval of only 4% on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
