Why watch this film?
Russian politics is one of the strangest, most complex and challenging topics to understand. After all, there are so many layers and nuances that it's hard to keep up with all the changes in this continent-sized country. And a great story to better understand the workings of the Russian political system is 'Citizen K', a documentary by Alex Gibney (of the excellent 'The Inventor: Searching for Blood in Silicon Valley'). Here, over a little more than two hours, the filmmaker tells the story of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, one of the richest men in Russia who was forced to serve a ten-year prison sentence in Siberia - which many believe happened because of his feuds with politician Vladimir Putin. Thus, mixing a tone of denunciation with a good investigative narrative, 'Citizen K' shows the backstage of this man's imprisonment and his path to "stardom" as one of the most famous dissidents in Russia.
