Why watch this film?
It must be said: 'The High Note' is yet another upbeat movie about people overcoming challenges on the path to their dreams, in the style of recent productions like 'La La Land', 'Crazy Rich Asians', and to a lesser extent, 'A Star is Born'. Though this film doesn't say anything particularly original about show business, it's full of hope and charm thanks to the performances of Dakota Johnson ('Fifty Shades of Grey') and the great Tracee Ellis Ross ('Black-ish'), with characters whose dynamic sometimes recalls Andy Sachs and Miranda Priestly in 'The Devil Wears Prada'. Pure escapist entertainment that may disappoint those who enjoyed director Nisha Ganatra's previous production ('Late Night'), though it's still fun.
