The Archivists

Three friends in a dystopian future rediscover a vinyl record and attempt to reimagine its song.

Why watch this film?

The coolest short film at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival. With a bold and original aesthetic, filmmaker Igor Drljaca shoots, with a Kodak 16mm camera, a group of friends in a dystopian future. Almost by chance, they stop at a house to see what's there. And among the overgrown vegetation and dust, they find a record. They put it on. And what they find is a battered and almost undecipherable version of 'Smalltown Boy', the classic Bronski Beat song. From there, the viewer is invited to dive into a story of musical experimentation, in which these friends in a dystopian and destroyed future try to build the culture of our times. It could go very wrong, but it's hard not to root for this good idea -- and excellent execution, it must be said -- to become a feature film in the near future.
