Transhood

Four transgender youths and their families redefine 'coming of age' in the heartland.

Why watch this film?

HBO's original documentaries often bring relevant topics that need a different look from society, especially when we refer to the conservative and prejudiced side. 'Transhood' is an example of this. The movie is extremely necessary as it follows five years of the lives of four transgender youths and their families. Trans people are still marginalized, not only in the United States but also in Brazil - a great movie to better understand this Brazilian scenario is 'Bixa Travesty', with Linn da Quebrada - and the idea of 'Transhood' is to bring an intimate and true vision of this. The production presented the transformations in the lives of the four protagonists during the gender transition, addressing the rejection they suffered from friends, the difficulty of dealing with body dysmorphia and also the whole political side of it, which tries to suppress the LGBTQ+ community. If you have an open mind, this documentary is truly educational.

Plot summary

Filmed over five years in Kansas City, this documentary follows four kids - beginning at ages 4, 7, 12, and 15 - as they redefine "coming of age." These kids and their families reveal intimate realities of how gender is re-shaping the family next door in a never-before-told chronicling of growing up transgender in the heartland. The film is a nuanced examination of how families tussle, transform, and sometimes find unexpected purpose in their identities as transgender families. Lighthearted and deeply moving, this story teaches us something new about being human.
