Why watch this film?
The debut feature film of Canadian filmmaker Geneviève Dulude-De Celles, 'A Colony' with a powerful yet subdued emotional sensibility that at times evokes the most poetic moments of Terrence Malick's cinema. These are big words for a movie that, in its synopsis, would seem like any other coming-of-age or initiation film. With delicacy, the film oscillates between the anxieties that come with leaving childhood and finding a place in adolescence (with its customary rites of passage) and notions of belonging to a society that often does not make room for the subtleties of racial identity.
