Adults in the Room

A left-wing Greek Finance Minister rebels against EU government to solve economic crisis.

Trailer

Why watch this film?

Tough theme, the Greek economic crisis had yet to receive a cinematic adaptation worthy of its importance within the macroeconomic scenario. At least, until now. Greek director Costa-Gavras, responsible for films such as 'Z' and 'The Capital', gives a pleasant format to the crisis in 'Adults in the Room'. Inspired by the book written by then Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, the production shows the backstage of the negotiations and dealings of the politician to try to solve the issue of Greece's debt - while, being a left-wing government, he is concerned with the welfare of the people and gives indications that he has no intention of "compensating the people". To tell this story, Costa-Gavras goes against the grain of Adam McKay (who bets on a more relaxed script to deal with these dense themes, as in 'The Big Bet'). He makes use of a linear and correct script, with small didactic touches to situate the public, but without ever investing in an exaggerated plasticity as in the case of the American. It lacks strength and relaxation at some moments, especially when 'Adults in the Room' becomes too stiff. It gets tiring. But still, the feature film has the gala direction of Costa-Gavras, who does not fail to impose his opinion within the History.
