Why watch this film?
"Schwarze Insel" is a German thriller that builds up in tones of coldness and heaviness. It is interesting to observe how the atmosphere is constructed oppressively over a climate of stagnation and idleness. The scenarios are extremely beautiful, and highlight the visual tension. However, the film fails to sustain the narrative atmosphere until the end, creating bumps and falling into a tedious place before revealing its trump cards, which makes the ending lose considerable strength. For lovers of the atmosphere of European heavy and rough thrillers like "Queen of Hearts" or even "Random Violence", it should be a rewarding choice.

The film recounts a controversial case that captured the attention of the rest of Europe and America, and skillfully portrays the clash of interests between the waning power of the church, Mortara's parents, and public opinion, with irreversible consequences for all involved.
