Why watch this film?
What an intriguing and disturbing experience 'Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes' is, the feature film that arrived in the Netflix catalog this Wednesday, 18th. Directed by Michael Harte, who makes his debut as director after being the editor of the fantastic 'Don't Fuck With Cats', the documentary takes us into the mind of British serial killer Dennis Nilsen, who killed 15 people. And how is this dive into Nilsen's mind done? As the film's title suggests, through archives. The serial killer recorded his thoughts, actions and reflections in more than 250 hours of taped recordings. In the best Ted Bundy style, we will better understand the actions of the murderer and how he became the criminal known throughout the United Kingdom. Harte, who had already done a good job telling the bizarre story of 'Don't Fuck With Cats', here has errors and successes in the conduct of the narrative. Firstly, it must be applauded for the good decision to delay showing Nilsen's face and, above all, avoiding the excessive glamorization of the figure of the murderer. Something that 'Conversing with a Serial Killer: Ted Bundy' failed. However, it is important to note that the film is not vigorous and agile like these other Netflix criminal productions, betting on a slower and more reflective narrative, still with an atmosphere reminiscent of 'The House That Jack Built' and 'The Golden Glove'. Thus, it is a curious and very disturbing pastime about this real brutal crime.
