Why watch this film?
Debut feature film from French director Chloé Mazlo, 'Beneath the Skies of Lebanon' is the kind of movie that, on the specturm of period dramas, is completely removed from realism to embrace the extreme where Wes Anderson's 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is. The movie tells the story of a young woman during the 1950s, who leaves her native Switzerland to travel to Lebanon, where she falls deeply in love with an eccentric astrophysicist. There she founds her own little paradise on Earth, but an impending war threatens to destroy it. With the Lebanese Civil War as a backdrop, 'Beneath the Skies of Lebanon' stands out for its script and art direction that embrace innocence and faith in the power of love as a counterweight to the tragedy of war, cleverly mixing real action and excellent performances (Alba Rohrwacher is wonderful) with animation. The result may seem naive to some, but it will be a perfect movie for those looking for an optimistic view of the world.
