Rio de Vozes

A group of fishing families along the São Francisco River fight to survive amidst environmental threats.

Why watch this film?

Simple yet effective movie that shows one of the many faces of Brazil: the life of a dozen fishing families in different cities along the São Francisco River. Between Bahia and Pernambuco, they depend on the Old Chico for their subsistence. On the other hand, however, the São Francisco River is being weakened. It is being attacked, deforested, and polluted. How will these families continue with their work, their lives, and their routines? It is from this point of view that directors Andrea Santana and Jean-Pierre Duret follow a classic observational documentary (too traditional, it must be said) that shows these lives amidst uncertainties. It could have been a bit closer to these central figures, avoiding the exponential distance that occurs. Still, it brings an important discussion to a central social issue.
