Why watch this film?
From director Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose"), this is a somewhat conventional horror production, but very effective due to its direction and performances. 'Sinister' presents Hawke as a family father and writer who, obsessed with repeating the success of his first novel, decides to take his family to live in the house where a brutal murder took place. Very standard but satisfactory horror proposal that presents ideas about our relationship with images.

Plot summary

Inspired by a Joe Hill story, son of Stephen King, 'The Black Phone' is a typical suspense film, but with all the marks of horror filmmaker Scott Derrickson's (from the scary 'The Entity'). Here, a mysterious man (Ethan Hawke) begins to kidnap the children of an American small town. They usually disappear on the way back from school and never appear again. That's when the scared but brave Finney (Mason Thames) is taken by this man. In the basement of his kidnapper's house, the boy begins to see the other kidnapped children (generating some scares that will make you jump out of your seat) and devise a way to escape. With good rhythm, the movie never loses the attention of the audience and manages to leave anyone tense - either because of the scares that work, albeit rarely, or because that boy will be able to escape. Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch (from the British series 'Sherlock') plays the title character in a movie that brings magic into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With some adaptations and additions, the story of Stephen Strange is very close to the one created in comics by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko: a surgeon who loses the movement of his hands after an accident and, in search of a cure, ends up finding mystical arts. Fun - even though, at this point, the superhero origin movie form is already worn out - 'Doctor Strange' has exciting special effects and is great entertainment.

The Nightman a dramatic thriller that explores the dangerous boundary between love and darkness. The story follows a young pregnant woman who begins to question the perfection of her boyfriend upon discovering his possible involvement in mysterious disappearances and murders, linked to his sleepwalking behavior. With praised performances and precise direction, the film delves into complex themes of relationships and personal dilemmas, keeping the audience engaged in its dark suspense.
Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
