Why watch this film?
Thanks to the zombie movie franchise '[Rec]', Spanish filmmaker Paco Plaza has become a reference in modern horror cinema, and with each new project bearing his name, the expectations of genre fans increase. 'La abuela', although it does not reach these ambitions, offers a horror story that is as frighteningly metaphorical as it is elegantly presented. The story follows a young woman (Almudena Amor) who works as a model in Paris, but is forced to return to Madrid to take care of her grandmother (Vera Valdez), who raised her when she became an orphan and is now dependent due to a stroke. 'La abuela' is a metaphor about the fear of aging and that family ties become shackles, and although it relies on the already clichéd device of plunging its protagonist into a situation that is not clear if it is real or just a product of imagination, Plaza's skill in generating a truly dark and disturbing atmosphere makes this proposal stand out among so many others.

The Spanish filmmaker Paco Plaza (director of '[Rec]') returns with an emotional movie, taking him to a new territory in his filmography: the thriller. 'Quien a hierro mata' is a story of intrigue and revenge without grand ambitions, but with an excellent execution of the script written by four hands of Juan Galiñanes and Jorge Guerricaechevarría (screenwriter of 'As Bruxas de Zugarramurdi'). In addition, the film is starred by the always spectacular Luis Tosar ('Cela 211'), who was nominated for the Goya Award for his performance.

When "[REC]" premiered, the "found footage" device was already widely known, but the movie is a demonstration that, in the right hands, the device can be used for a glorious and immersive horror experience that will be hard to forget. Directed by Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró, this Spanish production is one of the most remembered zombie horror films of the 21st century so far.
Sister Death
When we talk about horror cinema and the name Paco Plaza ([Rec], Veronica), we know we can expect at least a satisfying experience. "Sister Death" confirms the rule: the film is about Narcisa (an outstanding Aria Bedmar), a young woman who had a miraculous childhood and decides to become a novice. Working as a teacher in a former convent turned girls' school, Narcisa soon experiences disturbing and strange events that lead her into a crisis of faith and the unraveling of terrible secrets within the convent. Without reinventing the wheel but with very effective imagery, it's a solid Spanish horror proposition in the ever-engaging trend of "cursed nuns."

The Nightman
The Nightman a dramatic thriller that explores the dangerous boundary between love and darkness. The story follows a young pregnant woman who begins to question the perfection of her boyfriend upon discovering his possible involvement in mysterious disappearances and murders, linked to his sleepwalking behavior. With praised performances and precise direction, the film delves into complex themes of relationships and personal dilemmas, keeping the audience engaged in its dark suspense.
Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
28 Days Later
