Love, Marilyn

Actresses embody Marilyn Monroe at different stages of her life through her own writings

Why watch this film?

There is a whole myth around the (tragic) life of Marilyn Monroe, a fascination that sometimes overshadows how brilliant her career was. Much has been written, spoken and filmed about this topic, to the point of exploiting the morbidity, so it is appreciated when portrayals honor the person in question.Love, Marilyn is a documentary built from her letters, poems and other writings compiled in the book Fragments: Poems, Intimate Notes, Letters. The letters and testimonies are read on screen by stars like Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Evan Rachel Wood, Adrien Brody and Uma Thurman, with a green screen that, truth be told, is rather unfortunate. It's a somewhat weepy documentary about the topic (director Liz Garbus has done better work, like What Happened, Miss Simone? or Becoming Cousteau), but it reveals who Norma Jean Mortenson was beneath Marilyn Monroe in a respectful manner, making it a good starting point for those interested in learning her story.
