Why watch this film?
Violence against the trans community has become a frequent topic in movies due to the normalization of abuses around the world. This was the case with the excellent and experimental 'Tangerine' and the impactful 'Boys Don't Cry', for example. In 'The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson', a Netflix exclusive documentary, these pains and abuses against the trans community go beyond. Mixing an investigation plot with a good amount of archive material, the feature film shows how transgender women suffer from institutions and entities that, in theory, should protect and safeguard all people. But prejudice takes over and the response is channeled into activism and protests. In addition to the director Héctor Carré's sensitivity, it is worth highlighting the modernity of the plot and how the story told in the movie remains current and touching even so many years later.
