Why watch this film?
A Mexican dramedy that marks the directorial debut of Chilean filmmaker Guillermo Calderón, the screenwriter behind dramas like Ema (by Pablo Larraín) and A Fantastic Woman (by Sebastián Lelio). Making it Up follows two makeup artist friends (Paulina Gaitán from Territory and Regina Blandón from Mirreyes versus Godínez) who, being bankrupt, reluctantly accept a job offered by the unstable friend of one of them (Ilse Salas from The Good Girls), leading to a series of amusing complications. The screenplay, also written by Calderón, is too chaotic, and despite clear influences from Almodóvar and tackling themes such as classism, persistence, and sisterhood, its message gets diluted. However, it features good dialogues and wonderful performances from its lead trio, making it enjoyable to watch.
