Nocebo

A fashion designer's mysterious illness baffles doctors until a Filipino carer uncovers a horrifying truth.

Why watch this film?

Director Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium) presents another proposal of psychological horror that aims for metaphorical levels of interpretation. "Nocebo” follows a fashion designer (Eva Green) who hires a Filipino nanny (Chai Fonacier) to help care for her daughter while dealing with a strange illness that neither her husband (Mark Strong) nor the doctors know how to treat. When the nanny attempts a traditional healing method, a horrifying truth comes to light. Garret Shanley's script proposes a metaphor for the blatant exploitation of Southeast Asian labor by the Western fashion industry, but it operates at a superficial level. Finnegan makes several directing and editing choices that hinder the plot rather than clarify it, but if you want to watch a horror film with more than just jump scares, "Nocebo" might be for you.
