Why watch this film?
Between the late 90s and early 2000s, Mexico City experienced a collective psychosis due to a series of murders, all of which were of elderly women. Directed by María José Cuevas (of the excellent Bellas de noche), The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders is a Netflix documentary about one of the most notorious and sensationalized serial killer cases south of the US border. At times, it resembles many other Netflix documentaries on real crimes, that simply exploit the story and its victims. However, this Mexican production manages to transcend those limits, and questions the role of the media - and the film itself - in creating this sensationalism... and its collateral victims.
