Why watch this film?
An example of a movie with an interesting idea, but whose execution is limited by the rigorous boundaries of its own mythology. Clearly inspired by 'Alien: The Eighth Passenger', 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' narrates what its original title suggests: the last days of the crew of the Demeter ship (narrated in some pages of Bram Stoker's original novel), condemned to transport Dracula from Romania to London. Although these narrative limitations inhibit creativity, André Øvredal's (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) direction manages moments of truly brutal and disturbing violence and terror. We already know the fate, but this is one of those cases where the journey is what is worth the most.

Plot summary
A terrifying new addition to the Dracula legend, based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker's classic novel, The Last Voyage of the Demeter chronicles the doomed journey of a merchant ship ferrying 50 mysterious wooden crates from Carpathia to London. As they set sail, the crew soon discover they are not alone on board: at night they are stalked by a hidden passenger whose monstrous thirst for blood turns the trip into a harrowing nightmare of tension, terror and unfathomable evil.

In 'Torden', the filmmaker dives into the creative and unusual story of a boy (Nat Wolff, from 'Paper Towns') who discovers he has powers of gods from Norwegian mythology. A fun and creative movie, good to watch with the family and travel through the typical fantasy stories of André Øvredal.

Based on the book of the same name, 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' is a compilation of short horror stories for the young adult audience - and features production by Guillermo del Toro ('The Shape of Water', 'Pan's Labyrinth'). All this resulting in a chilling movie just right, full of plot twists and full of weirdness. In other words, it falls right into the taste of teenage horror fans.

Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
