Why watch this film?

Premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival, "The Adults" is a film that revives the mumblecore style of the 2000s, with modest production values and a focus on dialogue and the complex relationships of frustrated adults. The story follows Eric (Michael Cera, "Scott Pilgrim"), a poker addict who returns to his hometown to visit his sisters, Rachel (Hannah Gross, "Tesla") and Maggie (Sophia Lillis, "Asteroid City"). While he tries to maintain a facade of maturity and composure, resentments and issues that fragmented his life and his relationship with his sisters soon begin to surface. This is a film that lives and dies by its screenplay and the lead performances. Fortunately, all of them are solid and elevate, through sincerity, a sometimes unfocused plot.
