Filmmaker Taika Waititi takes on the true –albeit with considerable creative liberties– story of the American Samoa national football team and their humiliating 31-0 defeat against Australia in 2001, and the coach hired to turn the team around. 'Next Goal Wins' follows coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), who, after hitting rock bottom in his personal life and being fired from the MLS, is recruited by the Polynesian team. Waititi fans from movies like 'Jojo Rabbit' or 'Thor: Ragnarok' will enjoy it, although it should be noted that some of its humor can be insensitive and even problematic.

Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi (Best Adapted Screenplay, 2019, “Jojo Rabbit”) directs this heartfelt, underdog comedy based on a true story and written by Waititi and Iain Morris. “Next Goal Wins” follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup qualifiers fast approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team into winners. This funny, uplifting film also features Will Arnett and Elisabeth Moss.

Jojo Rabbit
'Jojo Rabbit' is undoubtedly one of the most surprising movies of the 2019-2020 awards season. Director Taika Waititi ('What We Do in the Shadows' and 'Thor: Ragnarok') uses a child's mind to present the evils of extremism with a lot of humor. In the name of leaders we never see and through brainwashing we prefer not to see, we fight wars, repeat prejudices and preach ideals that have little to do with ourselves. Special mention for the performances of Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Waititi himself, but the show is really from young Roman Griffin Davis and Thomasin McKenzie. It is definitely not a story for all tastes and there is more drama and tears than the funny trailers let on, but it is certainly a movie that needs to be seen - and unfortunately and frighteningly, echoes a lot of today's world.
Thor: Love and Thunder
The fourth solo adventure of Thor - and the second directed by Taika Waititi - is a breath of fresh air for those experiencing Marvel and big shared universe fatigue. That's because 'Thor: Love and Thunder' finally brings back a self-centered story that doesn't require prior knowledge and delivers everything you need to know to understand the plot. Like in 'Thor: Ragnarok', this adventure invests in humor and jokes, making the titular character lighter. However, at the same time, the movie manages to bring some more dramatic (and even melodramatic) layers, evoking subthemes such as love, life, death, religion, empowerment and paternity. In this sense, the script knows how to get the most out of its star, Chris Hemsworth, while Natalie Portman's return offers more of her performance. Already Christian Bale, famous for being Christopher Nolan's Batman, manages to bring an interesting villain - albeit underutilized. Yes, there is an excess of themes and a polished script with better worked dialogues is missing, but still the work brings some good reflections - while empowering those who watch, especially those who are or have gone through difficult health moments or the loss of loved ones.
Thor: Ragnarok
Taika Waititi (“What We Do in the Shadows”) has taken over the Marvel Thor franchise to shake things up - most of the supporting cast is out (mainly on Earth) and plenty of humor, along with a style reminiscent of Jack Kirby's work in comics, is in. One of the film's merits also brings another hero into the mix: the Hulk, in a story that blends elements of comic book series like "Champions Challenge" and "Planet Hulk." Although it may not please those who preferred a more restrained tone for Thor, the feature was a success - with an ending that directly connects with “Avengers: Infinity War.”

A Brighter Tomorrow
Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti (winner of the Palme d'Or in 2001 for The Son's Room) returns with what has been called his 8½, for obvious reasons. A Brighter Tomorrow is the story of a filmmaker struggling to shoot a movie about the Hungarian Revolution, while trying to save his marriage to his producer wife. The film satirizes the current state of cinema, and perhaps indulges a bit too much in its nostalgia. It is far from the best that veteran Moretti has to offer, but if you've enjoyed his previous films, you will undoubtedly enjoy this one.

Club Zero
Club Zero is a film with a risky proposition: to understand how young people, especially those of Generation Z, dive headfirst into new trends to feel like they belong to something. But at what cost? That's what this complicated film by Jessica Hausner (Little Joe) seeks to understand. Complicated, not because it has any complexity, but because it tackles a thorny issue (this particular behavior) and further complicates it by addressing eating disorders, with young people stopping eating for the sake of a better world. With not much material to discuss, the film ends up going in circles and dangerously falling into emptiness. However, Hausner still manages to find some space to reflect on where the world is heading and, above all, where this dangerous herd behavior is taking us — something that, ultimately, the film itself ends up embracing by adhering to trends reminiscent of Wes Anderson's style and Greek cinema aesthetics.
