Between the 1980s and early 90s, He-Man was a craze. Animated cartoons every day on TV, dolls and collectibles of all kinds in stores, comic books in abundance, a live-action movie in theaters and hundreds of thousands of children excited about the character. This documentary, funded through Kickstarter, tells how it all began: in the corridors of Mattel, the toy giant, from the mix of concepts like Conan and Star Wars, all in the same cauldron. The movie interviews not only those involved in creating the ‘Masters of the Universe’ line, but also actors such as Dolph Lundgren, who played the hero on the big screen.

Through a select group of girls participating in a federal government simulation in Missouri, this film reveals, firstly, how American politics operates. But secondly, and more importantly, it explores how an environment supposedly empowering girls can both propel and limit them at the same time, raising questions about what we understand about power and the ways to exercise it.

Documentaries about the climate crisis are never too many, but sometimes it can be challenging to find one that presents its arguments in a different and memorable way. Earth Protectors is a worthy attempt. Directed by French artist and environmental activist Anne de Carbuccia, it artistically documents her 10-year journey around the world exploring the impact of climate change in various countries, as well as the solutions undertaken to empower global citizens and address the crisis. At times, de Carbuccia and her works take more prominence than necessary, but she manages to present vital information.
