Suspiria

An American dancer uncovers sinister secrets at a German ballet academy amidst grisly murders.

Why watch this film?

Loosely based on Thomas De Quincey's essay 'Suspiria de Profundis' (derived from his experiences with opium), and with an aesthetic inspired by the 'giallo' cinema (Italian fictions of the 60s and 70s, about mysteries with explicit violence and erotism), 'Suspiria' is considered the masterpiece of director Dario Argento ('Deep Red'), as well as a cult classic whose influence marked filmmakers from Guillermo del Toro ('Cronos') to John Carpenter ('Prince of Darkness'), Clive Barker ('Hellraiser: Door to Hell'), Quentin Tarantino ('Kill Bill'), Nicolas Winding Refn (whose 'The Neon Demon' is a direct descendant) and Luca Guadagnino (who directed the 2018 remake). Conceived more as a film for the senses than for logic, it is a hallucinogenic experience between fairy tale and gothic terror, with a psychedelic production design that overflows with color through the cinematography of Luciano Tovoli, and an unforgettable soundtrack by the band Goblin. It is also the first and, by far, the most famous of Argento's 'Mothers Trilogy' (succeeded by 'Inferno' in 1980 and 'Mother of Tears' in 2007), which also became Jessica Harper's ('Phantom of the Paradise') most iconic role and marked the last appearance of the legendary Joan Bennett ('Evil Souls'), with also appearances by Miguel Bosé and Udo Kier.
