Dark Suns

A gripping investigation into Mexico's mass graves, exposing a climate of impunity and corruption.

Why watch this film?

Presented at the Ambulante Festival, and awarded at the 2019 UNAM International Film Festival and Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival, 'Soles Negros' is a powerful documentary by Canadian filmmaker Julien Elie, delving into the violent social reality of several regions in Mexico, and exposing it like few others. Presented in chapters, 'Soles Negros' sacrifices some depth to cover multiple facets of a complex problem, which at the same time allows for a more direct narrative than its contemporaries like 'La Libertad del Diablo'. It is shocking and heartbreaking, but at the same time hopeful in its portrait of everyday heroes of the country, the men and women who refuse to be passive victims and fight against impunity and corruption with the hope that one day, these crimes will not be repeated.
