Aniara

A space shuttle's passengers contemplate their existence after being thrown off course.

Why watch this film?

Based on the eponymous book by Nobel Prize winner Harry Martinsson, 'Aniara' is one of those science fiction stories with existential discussions. Alongside 'Ad Astra', '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'Stalker', the feature film plays with the finitude of life in contrast to the immense unknown of space - inevitable, too, not to draw parallels with the work of H.P. Lovecraft. From there, Swedish directors Pella Kagerman and Hugo Lilja show this journey into their characters, who are wandering in space after an accident on the Earth-Mars route. But it is worth saying that it is not a plasticized cinema, already digested for its audience. It is almost like a last act of '2001: A Space Odyssey' distributed over 105 minutes, provoking and challenging the audience to better understand all that narrative and visual experimentation that arises from the adapted script. A difficult movie, but worth exploring.
